What can we help you find?
- SAFE life™ FAQs
What are SAFElife™ urine drug panel and cup tests used for?
These tests indicate if one or more prescription or illicit drugs is present in the urine sample. The specific product will test for the drugs listed on the product package.
Any preliminary positive results should be confirmed with a laboratory test.
What are SAFE life™ oral fluid used for?
These tests indicate if one or more prescription or illicit drugs is present in the oral fluid sample. The specific product will test for the drugs listed on the product package.
Any preliminary positive results should be confirmed with a laboratory test.
What is “cut-off level”?
The cut-off level is the specific level at which a drug must be present at or above to product a positive result. If the concentration of a drug in the sample is at or above the cutoff concentration, the drug test result will be preliminary positive. If the concentration of a drug in the sample is below the cutoff concentration, the drug test result will be negative. If an unexpected result is obtained a second drug test should be performed. We recommend that preliminary positive results are confirmed using a laboratory drug test.
What is the difference between over-the-counter, prescription and illicit drugs?
Over-the-counter drugs are those which are available without prescription and taken for medicinal purposes. Prescription drugs are only available when prescribed by a healthcare professional. Illicit drugs are those which do not have any prescribed use and are obtained and ingested illegally. For example; codeine (OTC), morphine (prescription), heroin (illicit). Each of these drugs may produce a positive result on an Opiates test but the donor may have a legitimate reason for taking the drug in two of these scenarios.
How accurate are the tests?
The tests are highly accurate when used according to the Instructions For Use. If an unexpected result is obtained a second test should be performed. Positive results should be confirmed using laboratory drug tests.
If the test results are negative, can the conclusion be that the donor does not have drugs in their system?
If the sample was collected properly and if the test was performed according to the Instructions For Use, then the drug was not detected at or above the cutoff level specified. However, it is possible that drug is present below the level of the cutoff. If in doubt a more sensitive laboratory test may be used to confirm the result.
Does a preliminary positive result mean that drugs are present in the donor's sample?
This means that the drug has been detected at or above the cutoff level specified. For full confirmation a laboratory test should be conducted on the same sample.
What should I do if the lab test confirms a positive result?
A confirmed result means that the drug was present in the sample. We recommend you follow company Drug & Alcohol Policy or local procedures.
How do SAFElife™ drug tests work?
SAFElife™ drug tests use the principal of competitive immunoassay to screen for the presence of drugs.
When the test is activated, the sample is absorbed into the device by capillary action. It flows across the pre-coated membrane, and is mixed with the respective drug antibody conjugates.
If concentrations of sample drugs are below the cutoff for the corresponding drugs the antibody conjugates bind to the respective drug-protein conjugates immobilized in the Test Region (T) of the device. This produces a colored band in the Test Region (T) that indicates a negative result.
On the contrary, if concentrations of sample drugs are at or above the cutoff level for the corresponding drugs, the free drugs in the sample sample bind to the respective drug antibody conjugates. This prevents the respective drug antibody conjugates from binding to the respective drug-protein conjugates immobilized at the Test Region (T) of the device which prevents a colored band from forming at the Test Region (T) and indicates a preliminary positive result.
To ensure the test has been performed correctly, a colored band must be present at the Control Region (C).
How can I ensure sufficient oral fluid sample has been collected?
The collection swab used to collect the oral fluid sample has a red indicator to confirm when enough oral fluid sample has been collected.
